Concert Choir spring performance set for April 17

RELEASED: April 14, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Concert Choir will present its spring concert at 2 p.m. April 17 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Concert highlights include the world premiere of a student composition titled "La Mia Preghiera" and the performance of a piece commissioned in honor of choir director Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff.

Sophomore Andrew Steffen, of New Richmond, composed the piece translated as "My Prayer," and dedicated the score to the choir. Steffen is a piano accompanist for Concert Choir and a member of the popular a cappella group Innocent Men.

"This composition has been a work in progress for over three years," Steffen said. "I think of this piece as a culmination of my love for choral music and this department at UW-Eau Claire. The audience at the concert can expect to hear adaptations of writing techniques heard from popular contemporaries in the choral world as well as an extremely genuine and heart-felt performance from the Concert Choir."

The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eau Claire commissioned "Ring Out, Wild Bells" by James Mulholland expressly to recognize Schwartzhoff, who has served as its director of music since 1992. Mulholland is a composer and arranger who is often commissioned by high schools and universities, as well as the American Choral Directors Association. Schwartzhoff, who has been active in the ACDA recently received its highest honor, the Morris Hayes Award for lifetime achievement in choral art.

Members of the church's Chancel Choir will join the Concert Choir for the premiere of this work. In turn, members of the Concert Choir will join the Chancel Choir in May when the piece is performed at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Concert Choir will be accompanied on piano by Steffen and junior Alexander Jacques, Oneida.

One of six UW-Eau Claire choral ensembles, Concert Choir has traveled to Europe on eight concert tours between 1964 and 2008 and has released five music CDs. In 2006 the choir received an international award for artistic excellence and cultural exchange from the Federation of the Mediterranean in Italy. In 2009 the group performed at the Washington National Cathedral and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Choral Festival in Washington, D.C.

The choir's upcoming tour schedule is as follows:

  • April 18, Menomonie High School, Durand High School, River Falls High School and UW-River Falls.
  • April 19, Winona and Winona Cotter High schools and St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
  • April 20, St. John's Catholic Church and Rochester Mayo High School, Rochester, Minn.

Tickets for the April 17 concert, available online and at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
