EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present a guest artist recital, featuring violinist Merwin Siu, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. It is the second in a string division guest artist series.

Siu is principal second violinist for the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. He has been featured as a guest soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra as well as in performing arts series in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. He holds a master's degree in music from Indiana University and degrees in English and music from Montreal's McGill University.

Drs. Tulio Rondón and Owen Lovell, assistant professors of music at UW-Eau Claire, will perform with Siu. Dr. Gretchen Peters, associate professor of music, will lead a discussion on the historical significance of the performed works.

The musicians will perform Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2 by Shostakovich. According to Lovell, Trio No. 2 is an icon of chamber music repertoire and covers a wide range of emotions. As for Trio No. 1, Lovell said it is rarely played because it was composed when Shostakovich was a teenager.

"It offers a window into the young composer's influences and budding creativity," said Lovell, an accomplished pianist. Lovell has performed in 12 U.S. states, Washington D.C., Canada, Mexico and the Netherlands. Siu will also conduct a violin masterclass at 6:30 p.m. April 19 in Phillips Recital Hall.

Rondón and Lovell both joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty in 2008. Rondón, an accomplished cellist, has studied, taught and performed all over the world. Born in Venezuela, he began teaching at the Simón Bolivar Conservatory at the age of 17.

The one-hour program is free and open to the public and has been funded through a grant from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. For more information on music events, visit the online events calendar.
