Continuing Education to offer summer leadership workshop for high school students

RELEASED: April 5, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education will offer "Leadership Without Authority," a training workshop for high school student leaders. The program will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 8-11 at UW-Eau Claire.

"Leadership Without Authority" is for student leaders such as sports team captains, club presidents, service team organizers or youth group leaders. Students entering grades 9-12 will learn how to be more effective in leadership roles. Developed and facilitated by collaborative leadership experts, the workshop will help students develop and practice leadership skills such as teamwork, planning and active listening.

Dr. Mickey Kolis, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of education studies and "Leadership Without Authority" lead instructor, believes that the program serves an important need in young people's lives. "Students today have many leadership opportunities through clubs, sports, work and service tasks. 'Leadership Without Authority' will teach them to lead in ways that serve the group's needs while also supporting individual group members."

The program cost is $149 per person and includes 24 hours of instruction, a student handbook and program T-shirt. To register, obtain additional program information or request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, call Continuing Education at 715-836-3636 or 866-893-2423, use the Wisconsin Relay System (711), visit the Continuing Education website or email ce@uwec.edu.
