ECCO opening concert to feature music faculty

RELEASED: Sept. 24, 2010

ECCO logoEAU CLAIRE — Three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty members will be featured soloists during the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra's opening concert Oct. 2. The orchestra's 13th season will begin with an all-Vivaldi concert at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 202 E. Grand Ave. in Eau Claire.

Soloist and guest artist Dr. Tulio Rondón, cellist and assistant professor of music, will perform, as well as three members of the chamber orchestra: oboist Dr. Christa Garvey, associate professor of music; bassoonist Dr. Kristine Fletcher, senior lecturer of music; and flutist Jeanne Kolis, a UW-Eau Claire alumna. Ivar Lunde, Jr., ECCO music director and professor emeritus of music at UW-Eau Claire, will conduct the program.

"Although all the music is by a single composer, there is a great deal of variety in Antonio Vivaldi's music and the program will illustrate that well," Lunde said. "We will be featuring soloists on four instruments, and will present three of Vivaldi's sinfonias as a kind of 'glue' that connects those very different concerti."

Vivaldi, who lived from 1678-1741, was a composer and violin virtuoso as well as a priest. Born in Venice, Italy, he is recognized as one of the greatest composers of Baroque music and is known best for composing concertos for a wide variety of instruments, especially the violin.

Tickets, available at Morgan Music, Neff's Piano Shop, Festival Foods, Mega Foods East and West, and at the door, are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $8 for students. A discount package, providing four coupons that can be used in any combination for any concert, is also available for $60.

The chamber orchestra is featured on Community Television's analog channel 96 and digital channel 993 or digital tuner channel 98-3 Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 6:30 p.m. The current program previews the Oct. 2 concert and features and features Kolis and Lunde. The CTV program is hosted by Tom Barland.
