'Love Your Body Day' events begin Oct. 4

RELEASED: Sept. 21, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Women's and Gender Equity Center will host several events to recognize the National Organization of Women's "Love Your Body Day," to be observed nationally Oct. 21.

Events at UW-Eau Claire begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 with an interactive article discussion titled "Dying to be Thin: Women, Body Image and Self Esteem" in the Sutherland Hall TV Lounge. The discussion will focus on factors that contribute to high rates of eating disorders in women and strategies for building self-esteem. Articles for the discussion can be accessed through the WAGE website.

From Oct. 11-17 WAGE will feature a "Love Your Body Day" poster exhibit in the display cases on the first floor of Davies Center. The display will feature 20 photographs of students, faculty and staff, paired with descriptions of why they are confident in themselves. The intent of the "Love Your Body Day" poster exhibit is to show that everyone is beautiful and unique.

On Oct. 18 WAGE will host a film screening of Jean Kilbourne's 2010 film "Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's Image of Women" at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. The screening will be followed by a discussion.

"This film addresses the way the media and advertisements portray women," said Abby Vercauteren, WAGE Center women's issues program coordinator.

"Love Your Body Day" events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Abby Vercauteren at 715-836-2693 or vercaual@uwec.edu.
