RELEASED: Sept. 21, 2010

map and flag of FinlandEAU CLAIRE — Prize-winning Finnish journalist and author Jukka Rislakki will give a presentation to faculty, students and the general public at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Rislakki will present "Finland in the Cold War" at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 in Room 102 of Hibbard Humanities Hall. He will discuss the forced neutrality of Finland from 1945-91, a concept that has come to be generalized as "Finlandization." Rislakki's presentation will offer a new and different perspective that will challenge audience members to critically assess their views of the Cold War and understand the relevance of the Finnish experience to world politics and diplomacy today.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow at the home of Drs. Irene and Paulis Lazda, UW-Eau Claire faculty members, at 504 E. Grant Ave., Eau Claire.

Rislakki earned a journalism degree in 1969 and a master's degree in political science in 1972. Until recently he was the foreign news desk correspondent for Helsinki Sanomat, the largest subscription newspaper in Finland and the Scandinavian countries, and traveled frequently to the Soviet Union. Rislakki is the recipient of numerous journalism awards and is a nominee for the prestigious Finlandia Prize.

His publications include "No Home for Us Here," about the mass annihilation of Finnish "border-hoppers" in the Soviet Union in 1938; "The Case for Latvia, the Disinformation Campaign Against a Small Nation"; "Bad Sector, Atomic Bomb, Cold War and Finland"; "Finnish Military Intelligence in War and Peace"; and "International Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence."

Rislakki's visit is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; the departments of history, communication and journalism, political science, and geography and anthropology; the Baltic Student Organization; and Student Senate.
