Events planned for Alcohol Awareness Week, Sept. 20-25

RELEASED: Sept. 20, 2010

CASE Poster for saving race eventEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will observe National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Sept. 20-25. This year's theme is "Be an Everyday Hero." The purpose of the week is to highlight activities on campus that are fun, safe and healthy, and to promote responsible alcohol use for students who choose to drink.

"Students can be everyday heroes by looking out for friends and keeping each other safe in social situations where alcohol may be present," said Jennifer Lee, director of the Center for Alcohol Studies and Education.

CASE is running a contest throughout the week. Students who attend at least three of the activities or events will be entered into a drawing for prizes, including the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Target. Students can obtain a punch card to participate in the contest at the CASE office in Room 30 of Schofield Hall. Event calendars for the week will be posted around campus and on the CASE website.

The week's activities kicked off Sept. 20 on the campus mall with a health fair featuring information from several campus offices and student organizations. From 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 22, Higherground will host Virgin Bourbon Street, where students compete to make the best alcohol-free cocktail. This will be followed by an outdoor showing of the movie "Kick-Ass" behind Sutherland Hall.

The week's events will close with "The Saving Race," a 5K run and one-mile family run/walk. Participants are encouraged to dress as a superhero. This is the fifth annual 5K race organized by CASE in memory of Michael Noll and all other UW-Eau Claire students who have died in alcohol-related tragedies. Proceeds from the event help support CASE's efforts to reduce high-risk drinking and its consequences. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the Haas Fine Arts Center parking lot, and the race begins at 10 a.m.
