EAU CLAIRE — The Gold Caps chapter of Mortar Board at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was among the outstanding chapters honored for excellence at the 2010 Mortar Board National Conference July 23-25 in Chicago, Ill.

The group was one of just 22 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, presented to outstanding chapters accomplishing significant achievements in chapter management and contributing meaningful service to their institutions.

Gold Caps was also one of 19 chapters that received a Project Excellence Award, granted for notable achievement in scholarship, leadership, fundraising, service, participation in the "Reading is Leading" national project, alumni involvement or Mortar Board Week. The chapter was recognized for its program "Leadership in Action," which paired undergraduate students with university faculty and administrators for a daylong career shadow program.

Chapter president Deanna Schlies and administrative liaison Paula Stuettgen were present to accept the awards.

"This award means a lot," Schlies said. "I went to the conference in Chicago and I met a lot of amazing people who come from amazing Mortar Board programs. To be honored as one of the few Golden Torch winners means great things are happening on our campus. This is just another way that Mortar Board is living up to UW-Eau Claire's motto of 'excellence.'"

Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown to include 228 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million members across the nation. The Gold Caps chapter at UW-Eau Claire was chartered in 1976 and currently has 51 members.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include distinguished politician Condoleezza Rice, Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees and Suzy's Zoo creator Suzy Spafford.
