EAU CLAIRE — The Golden Dragon Acrobats will open the 2010-11 Artists Series season Sept. 23 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

"Juggling everything from umbrellas to soccer balls — and with props as varied as ladders and giant spinning wheels — the performers show why they're world famous," wrote the New York Post. "Whether bending their bodies into seemingly impossible positions or balancing each other in feats of incredible strength ... the company delivers beautifully choreographed routines showcasing their amazing skills and physicality, accompanied by a musical score of traditional Chinese music filtered through a New Age sensibility."

The world's leading Chinese acrobatic troupe, the Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than 25 centuries ago. The company's reputation is solidly rooted in a commitment to the highest of production values and an attention to artistic details that is unparalleled in the art form. World-renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and beauty.

The ancient art of acrobatics has developed into one of China's most popular art forms. As well as evolving into many forms of performance — dance, opera, martial arts and sports — acrobatics has served an important role in the cultural exchange between China and Western nations. The citizens of China continue to present their acrobatic art for the world today, to portray their hard-working nature and set forth an example of the rich traditions of Chinese culture.

Performing feats on chairs stacked 10 stories high, the troupe has traveled to all 50 states and to more than 65 countries on five continents. The Golden Dragon Acrobats have been presented with the National Association of Campus Activities Entertainer of the Year Award and Campus Activities Today's Performer of the Year Award, and the company received two prestigious New York Drama Desk Award nominations for its Broadway performances.

Food and drink will be available for purchase prior to the performance and at intermission. This full reception will kick off the season and introduce the Artists Series' new "Cookies for a Cause" initiative. Cookies made especially for the program by Blugold Dining will be sold at all Artists Series events, creating awareness of nonprofit community organizations while also raising money for a deserving cause. Profits for the first event in the series will benefit The Community Table, an Eau Claire organization that serves hot meals 365 days per year to those who need food and hospitality. Representatives will be on hand with information about what the organization does to help meet the needs of our community.

Tickets are $17 for the public, $15 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, or $7 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets for students are half-price, $3.50, until the day of the event. On the day of the event, students must pay the full student-ticket price.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard, Visa or Discover when ordering by phone. Call 715-836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin. The Artists Series is also funded in part by Visit Eau Claire ... The Unexpected Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio, WHYS Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office of the University Centers.
