Musical events for the week of Oct. 31

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Oct. 31. All events are free and open to the public.

Monday, Nov. 1:

  • Senior Elisabeth O'Keefe, Appleton, will present a piano recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. O'Keefe will present selections by Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Stravinski and Debussy.
  • Guest artist Sean Botkin will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Botkin will perform several piano preludes by Sergei Rachmaninoff, including Rachmaninoff's preludes in C major, B flat major and F sharp minor. Following an intermission, he will perform Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 28. Botkin recently returned from a European tour sponsored by the grandson of Rachmaninoff. The tour included stops in Italy and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Wednesday, Nov. 3:

  • Senior Julia Flanagan, Milwaukee, and junior Britta Gilbertson, Fond du Lac, will present a soprano voice recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Gilbertson will perform selections by Mozart, Schumann, Schubert and Henri Duparc. Flanagan will perform pieces by Amy Marcy Beach, Ernest Chausson and Schubert.
  • Senior Anna Brake, Brookings, S.D., will present her composition degree recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Music students will perform several of Brake's original pieces, including "Missouri Evening," "Rouge," "Samana," "Up Tight Break Down" and others.

Thursday, Nov. 4:

  • Members of the American Music Therapy Association for Students will perform at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Students will perform several pieces by Bernard Andres, Marie Auguste Durand, Beethoven, Karl Wienard and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The performance will highlight instruments such as piano, harp, oboe and flute.
  • Guest artist Steven Mead, a world-renowned brass performer will give a euphonium recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. For the first half of the performance, Mead will perform alongside pianist Dr. Barbara Young, lecturer of music. Young has performed with Mead in recitals in the United States and abroad on a variety of occasions, as well as with numerous other international artists in Europe and the United States. The performance will feature the world premiere of "Summit," a new work written for piano and euphonium by Dr. Ethan Wickman, assistant professor of music. For the second half of the recital, Mead will perform with the UW-Eau Claire Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Peter Haberman, assistant professor of music. The group will perform four original pieces by Mead, including "Boccalari's Fantasia di Concerto" and "Catelinet's Variations on Rule Brittania."
