EAU CLAIRE — Work will begin Oct. 25 on a project to pave Putnam Drive from Garfield Avenue to the Nursing Building on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.
The project will allow "dry land access" for emergency vehicles to the university's new university student center, for which construction is scheduled to begin in early 2011, said Terry Classen, UW-Eau Claire director of Facilities Management. Such access is required by the Eau Claire Fire Department, and meeting that requirement was a condition of the Eau Claire Plan Commission and City Council approval of the plans for the university student center, Classen said.
A portion of the paving project area had been paved previously, but the surface has deteriorated, Classen said. The paving project will include curb and gutter construction and require the removal of 10 ash trees of various sizes on the campus side of the road near the Nursing Building.
A project to light the repaved stretch of Putnam Drive, which is a city-owned street, will follow next spring, Classen said.
