EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student Catherine Emmanuelle has been accepted to attend "FAIR GAME START Now Summit: Women Leaders for Nuclear Security" Oct. 18-19 in Washington, D.C. The event, hosted by The White House Project, will consist of a two-day leadership training program.

Emmanuelle, a women's study major from Eau Claire, will learn about nuclear security, campaign strategy, public speaking skills, working for nonprofit organizations, state and federal lobbying, and how to advocate effectively.

Participants will meet former CIA operations officer Valerie Plame and watch an advance screening of "Fair Game," a film based on Plame's autobiography. They will also hear speeches from Rose Goettemoeller, assistant secretary of the Bureau of Verification, Compliance and Implementation; Michle Flourney, undersecretary of defense for policy; and Naila Bolus, executive director of Ploughshares Fund.

The White House Project advocates for more women to hold political positions. The organization partners with Participant Media in the Social Action, a campaign to encourage more participation by women in politics.

"I am a graduate of The White House Project and NEW Leadership Wisconsin and hope to encourage fellow women. Despite the obstacles in front of us, running for public office can and should be done," Emmanuelle said.

According to Emmanuelle, this training is another forward step in preparing emerging leaders to serve the public as the doors of opportunity continue to open.

She said the summit will be helpful as she prepares for her future as a policymaker.

"I have a persistent fire in my belly that says that I should be at the policymaking table, not just to represent women — but all people in my community."
