Musical events for the week of Oct. 17

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Sunday, Oct. 17. All events are free and open to the public.

Sunday, Oct. 17:

  • Guest artist Jeri-Mae Astolfi will present "The New Piano Music from the Wisconsin Alliance of Composers" at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Astolfi will present selections by James Chaudoir, Jeffrey Phillips Burns, James Crowley, Ed Martin and others. The recipient of numerous awards, scholarships and grants, Astolfi's professional activities have taken her throughout Canada, the United States and abroad. Her advanced studies in piano performance were with pianists Helmut Brauss (University of Alberta), Tom Plaunt (McGill University) and Lydia Artymiw (University of Minnesota), with whom she completed doctoral studies. Astolfi is currently a member of the music faculty at UW-Oshkosh and previously taught at Henderson State University in Arkansas. The recital is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Academic Affairs Professional Development Program and the department of music and theatre arts.

Monday, Oct. 18:

  • The UW-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts will present the 27th OcTUBAfest at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature tuba and euphonium students from the university in solo and small ensemble performances. Students will present selections by Joseph DeLuca, Vincent Persichetti, Eric Ewazen and others.
  • Senior Brandon Covelli, Racine, will present his degree recital on piano at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Covelli will perform pieces by Domenico Scarlatti, Franz Joseph Haydn, Johann Sebastian Bach, Frederic Chopin and Sergei Prokofiev.

Tuesday, Oct. 19:

  • Junior Elizabeth Tomlinson, Clive, Iowa, and senior Loren Endorf, Ham Lake, Minn., will present a joint trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. They will be assisted on piano by Anne Kubiatowicz, and will present selections by Alexander Goedicke, Alexandar Arutunian, George Friderick Handel, George Enesco and Robert Schumann.

Wednesday, Oct. 20:

  • Senor Alyssa Severson, Eau Claire, will present her degree recital in composition at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Music students will perform several of Severson's original works, including Brass Quintet No. 1, "Namekagon," "El Tiburn" and "Chamber Piece No. 1."

Thursday, Oct. 21:

  • Senior Michael Vandercheuren, Madison, will present a saxophone recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center, with selections by Ingolf Dahl, Claude T. Smith, Jacques Ibert, Burton Lane and James Francis McHugh.
  • Senior Mary Zimmerman, Green Bay, will present her degree recital on piano at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center, performing selections by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin and senior Anna Brake.

Saturday, Oct. 23:

  • Senior Emily Hotchkiss, Mosinee, will present her capstone dance recital at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The recital will highlight Hotchkiss' achievements in choreography and dance, and feature music by Duffy, Coldplay, Emmy Rossum, Lady Gaga and more.
