National Coming Out Day to be observed Oct. 11

RELEASED: Oct. 5, 2010

Out with it logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's celebration of National Coming Out Day — "Out With It!" — will take place Oct. 11, with music, food, stories and conversations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall. In the event of rain, the program will move into Zorn Arena.

Established in 1988, National Coming Out Day is a civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. It is observed by members of the LGBT communities and their friends and allies on Oct. 11 every year.

The College Feminists, Forward Momentum, Spectrum, Students for a Fair Wisconsin and the Student Life and Diversity Commission of the Student Senate are among the student organizations that will be represented, along with the Dean of Students office. T-shirts will be given to those who would like to tell their coming-out stories.

The program is sponsored by the Women's and Gender Equity Center, a Student Affairs unit of UW-Eau Claire. WAGE advocates for the welfare of those who have historically been marginalized because of their sexual and/or gender identity.
