Symphonic Choir to perform Nov. 21

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphonic Choir and University Symphony Orchestra will perform at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center, under the direction of Dr. Alan Rieck, associate professor of music.

Student and faculty soloists will be featured throughout the concert, including soprano Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, associate professor of music; mezzo soprano Heng Xia, lecturer of music; tenor Dr. Mark Mowry, lecturer of music; alto music majors Alicia Fitchett, a senior from Green Bay, and Lauren Schell, a senior from Stoughton; and bass Anthony Reed, a junior from Alexandria, Minn.

The first half of the concert will feature Johann Sebastian Bach's "Magnificat" and the second half will feature "Te Deum" by Georges Bizet. Bach's "Magnificat" was composed for orchestra, a five-part choir and four or five soloists. Bizet's "Te Deum" was his first composition after having won the prestigious Prix de Rome. The piece is composed for soprano, tenor, chorus and orchestra.

The Symphonic Choir specializes in the study and performance of music composed for chorus and orchestra. The group is made up of students from many scholastic disciplines within the university as well as singers from throughout the Chippewa Valley. Two major concerts are presented each year with the University Symphony Orchestra.

The University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, is a 60-member student ensemble that performs symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
