Emeritus faculty member to perform with Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra

RELEASED: Nov. 17, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — Paul Kosower, professor emeritus of music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will join the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra as principal cellist for a Nov. 20 concert at Grace Lutheran Church, 202 W. Grand Ave. in Eau Claire.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be conducted by Ivar Lunde, Jr., ECCO's music director and professor emeritus of music at UW-Eau Claire.

Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor and overtures to three different operas will headline the program. The overtures are "Die Fledermaus" ("The Bat") by Johann Strauss Jr., "Idomeno" by W.A. Mozart and "Wilhelm Tell" by Gioacchino Rossini.

"I am especially delighted to have the cello section led by my former colleague Paul Kosower," Lunde said. "His cello solo at the beginning of the 'Wilhelm Tell' overture will help the audience imagine Switzerland's tall mountains and green valleys."

Dr. Kent McWilliams, associate professor of music at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., will be the soloist for the Grieg concerto. McWilliams has performed in more than a dozen countries and has won several piano competitions in Canada as well as one in Portugal.

"Kent McWilliams is an incredible pianist who will make the newly restored grand piano provided by Neff's Pianos sing like never before," Lunde said.

The concert is sponsored by Neff's Piano Shop. Owner Jeremy Neff has made a nine-foot Baldwin grand piano available for the concert and will provide a free ticket to any child accompanied by an adult. Coupons for free tickets can be picked up at Neff's Piano Shop, 510 Water St., Eau Claire, as well as at the door.

Tickets, available at Morgan Music, Neff's Piano Shop, Festival Foods, Mega Foods East and West, and at the door, are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $8 for students. A discount package, providing four coupons that can be used in any combination for any concert, is available for $60.

Photographs by Eau Claire photographer Mark Aumann will be on display at the church as part of ECCO's efforts to showcase local visual artists. The exhibit will present images from Vietnam and Nicaragua.

A pre-concert talk on "The Story of Die Fledermaus" will be presented at 6:45 p.m. in the Grace Lutheran chapel by Juliana Schmidt, music director for the Menomonie Chamber Singers and the Unitarian Society of Menomonie.

The chamber orchestra is featured on Community Television's analog channel 96 and digital channel 993 or digital tuner channel 98-3 Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 6:30 p.m. The current program previews the Nov. 20 concert and features Neff and Lunde. The CTV program is hosted by Tom Barland.
