UW-Eau Claire hosts successful food drive

RELEASED: Nov. 16, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — More than 3,800 pounds of food was collected and donated to Feed My People Food Bank through a recent University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire initiative to fight hunger and help those in need in the Chippewa Valley.

The Blugold Dining program sponsored a special Helping Hands Across America food drive Nov. 10. Donations from students, faculty, staff and community members this year surpassed last year's total by more than a thousand pounds.

Five student organizations and four university departments or offices took up Blugold Dining's challenge for group participation. The University Usher Corps and, for the third consecutive year, the Activities and Programs office, collected the most food per person.

The nonperishable food items collected on the UW-Eau Claire campus will help senior citizens, single parents, the working poor, the homeless, the mentally ill and others in need throughout the Chippewa Valley. More than 14,000 individuals each month rely on food received from programs supplied by Feed My People Food Bank. More than two million pounds of food is distributed each year to hunger-relief agencies in 14 counties in west-central Wisconsin.

The Blugold Dining program is administered by the University Centers.
