Middle East Awareness Week to
be observed Nov. 16-23

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will recognize Middle East Awareness Week Nov. 16-23 with events to educate students, faculty and community members about the religion of Islam and the Middle East. All events are free and open to the public except where noted. Featured experts and panelists include professors of religious studies and political science, Middle Eastern students and a veteran.

The film "Reel Bad Arab: How Hollywood Vilifies a People" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in Davies Theatre. A discussion will follow. A Middle Eastern luncheon to celebrate the cuisine of the region will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in The Dulany of Davies Center. The cost is $8.95 per person.

"Middle East Exposed," a panel discussion, will take place from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 22 in Room 100 of Hibbard Hall. Faculty, students and community members are invited to join in the discussion.

Arabic music by Hala Dasouqi, followed by a screening of "Khuda Ke Liya" is planned for 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 23 in Room 102 of Hibbard Hall. The 2007 film "In the Name of God" explores the difficulties of being Pakistani and Muslim in the post-9/11 world.

"The purpose of these events is to educate students, faculty and community members about the religion of Islam and the Middle East and to hopefully reverse some of the misconceptions people may have about the religion and the region," said UW-Eau Claire student Davendra Raj Ghandi Rajan of the UW-Eau Claire International Students Association.

Sponsors include the Office of Multicultural Affairs, division of Student Affairs, Blugold Dining, International Students Association, Student Life and Diversity Commission, and the departments of education studies, history, and philosophy and religious studies.
