Area youth to be on campus for
Hmong New Year event

RELEASED: Nov. 10, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The Blugold Beginnings Program will host a Hmong New Year celebration from noon-3 p.m. Nov. 13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Blugold Beginnings is a pre-college access program that pairs UW-Eau Claire mentors with fifth-12th-grade students. Each month the program offers the opportunity for the student participants to come to campus and participate in specialized events.

For the Nov. 13 event, approximately 50 school-age students from the Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Arcadia school districts will join their UW-Eau Claire student mentors at noon in the Towers Hall TV lounge. Several of the mentors will be dressed in traditional Hmong clothing and will give a presentation about the Hmong New Year. Traditional Hmong foods will be served for lunch.

After lunch the group will proceed to the Hmong New Year celebration in the Olson Addition of the McPhee Physical Education Center on upper campus. The goal of the event is to have students gain more insight into Hmong culture and traditions and learn why certain traditions are still practiced today. The event can help break down cultural barriers, said UW-Eau Claire sophomore and Blugold Beginnings mentor Kong Meng Her, Eau Claire.

There is a dress code for the celebration. No athletic jackets, baseball caps or baggy pants will be allowed.

For more information, contact Kong Meng Her at herkm@uwec.edu, Ong Lo at loo@uwec.edu or the Blugold Beginnings office at 715-836-3015.
