Campus to celebrate Hmong New Year Nov. 13-14

RELEASED: Nov. 3, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate the Hmong New Year with festivities on campus Nov. 13-14.

Faculty, staff, students and the general public are invited to play games, watch performances and sample traditional Hmong food from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. both days in the Olson Addition of the McPhee Physical Education Center on upper campus. The general admission fee is $3.

The game "Pov Pob," a ritual ball-tossing that is a traditional form of courtship for young people, will be played. Hmong participants are encouraged to wear traditional Hmong clothing.

The Hmong New Year is the most popular holiday celebrated by Hmong people. It is a time to start new lives or new beginnings. The time is usually celebrated by focusing on casting away old habits and welcoming new behaviors in life.

For more information, contact Charles Vue in the UW-Eau Claire Office of Multicultural Affairs, at vuecc@uwec.edu or 715-836-3017; or the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association at 715-832-8420.
