Musical events for the week of Nov. 7

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Nov. 7. All events are free and open to the public.

Monday, Nov. 8:

  • Junior Eric Frei, La Crosse, will present a tenor voice recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by senior Anna Torgerson, Frei will perform selections by George Fredrick Handel, Robert Alexander Schumann, Ccile Chaminade and Francesco Paolo Tosti.
  • The Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jeffery Crowell, associate professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Tuesday, Nov. 9:

  • The department of music and theatre arts will present a joint student wind chamber ensemble recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The recital will include original pieces by sophomores Katie Miller and Alex Widstrand.
  • Guest artists Angela Mortellaro and Mary Dibbern from the Minnesota Opera will present a soprano voice and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Pianist Dibbern is the head of music for the Minnesota Opera. Her activities include opera coaching, recitals, recordings, master classes at the university level and more. Soprano Mortellaro is a resident artist in the Minnesota Opera's Resident Artist Program for 2010-11, singing the roles of Amore in "Orpheus and Eurydice," Clorinda in "Cinderella," Annina in "La traviata" and the offstage voice in "Wuthering Heights."
  • Senior Brian Handeland, Minneapolis, Minn., will present his saxophone degree recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. He will present selections by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jeanine Rueff, Claude Debussy, Walter Blanton and others.

Wednesday, Nov. 10:

  • Senior Jeremy Gussin, Iowa City, Iowa, will present a bass-baritone recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Thursday, Nov. 11:

  • Juniors Katie Althof, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Jennifer Newton, Stillwater, Minn., will present a joint French horn recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Newton and Althof will perform selections by Camille Saint Saens, Ludwig van Beethoven, Reinhold Gliere, Lev Kogan and Paul Dukas, and also will perform Newton's original composition, "If Horns Could Dance."
  • Dr. Tim Lane, professor of music, and Lori Cruciani, lecturer of music, will present a joint flute and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. They will perform selections by Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Karl Czerny.
