EAU CLAIRE — Diane Willer, an information specialist in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire human resources department, will receive the annual Friend of Education Award from the Eau Claire Association of Educators at its Celebration of Service banquet May 27.

According to Ron "Duff" Martin, ECAE president, Willer has demonstrated advocacy for students and public education, supported the work of teachers in area schools, and shown respect for the people and work of the association.

Willer is the parent of a 21-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter who have attended Eau Claire area schools. She has served on the Locust Lane Elementary PTO, the Northstar Middle School PTSA and has been an active, eight-year member of the Parent Advisory Council for the Eau Claire Schools representing Locust Lane, Northstar and North High School.

She recently assisted judging for National History Day at Northstar and is a member of the "Parents Who Host" community action team — a subcommittee for the Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention in Eau Claire County. Willer also chaired a districtwide fundraiser to help pay for field trips for district students.

"I am so surprised and honored," said Willer. "I have a passion for public education, the students and the staff. During these tough economic times, educators have had to overcome more than they ever have and still provide students with a quality education. Our community should applaud our educators; they are the ones who deserve the awards."

Willer has been employed by UW-Eau Claire for 17 years.
