Student receives award for course work abroad

RELEASED: May 20, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Kelsey Swanson, Chaska, Minn., has received recognition for a paper she wrote during a semester abroad at Harlaxton College in Lincolnshire, U.K. Swanson is a member of UW-Eau Claire's Honors Program.

The paper, written for the course "Literature 330: Romancing Arthur," was selected for the Best Scholarly Paper Award at Harlaxton College during the spring 2010 semester. Swanson's professor, Dr. Roger Pieroni, of the University of Evansville in Indiana, praised her paper as "graduate-level work."

Swanson's paper, titled "Guinevere: Victorian Gender, Sexuality and Nature," was a character study of Lord Tennyson's Guinevere in his "Idylls of the King," with particular emphasis on Victorian gender ideology apparent throughout the idylls, according to Swanson. She focused on the male view of women and their sexuality throughout the idylls and the expectations they had of women.

"I also make note how these male-invented ideals give the female a particular role and power over the men of Tennyson's version of King Arthur's court," she said.

The Harlaxton program is a study abroad opportunity offered through the UW-Eau Claire Center for International Education and Harlaxton College, which is owned by the University of Evansville. The program is for students wishing to study with American students and professors as well as British faculty members. With the cooperation of her professors in Harlaxton, Swanson took "Romancing Arthur" as an Honors Program contract course, simultaneously earning academic credit through Harlaxton and Honors Program credit at UW-Eau Claire. Coincidentally, the Harlaxton program has recently created its own Honors Program, which will offer courses to UW-Eau Claire Honors Program students who study there.
