Public hearing on new student center
set for May 11

RELEASED: May 10, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — A public hearing to present the final environmental impact statement for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's new student center project and a temporary parking lot for use during construction of the center will begin at 5:30 p.m. May 11 in the Alumni Room of Davies Center.

The scope of the building project and the findings of the environmental impact statement will be presented during the public hearing.

The EIS identifies how the project may impact physical, biological, social, archeological, historical and economic environments. Those attending Tuesday's public hearing can provide oral or written comments regarding issues or concerns they have regarding the project. The review period for the EIS will continue through May 26.

The State Building Commission gave final approval April 28 to UW-Eau Claire to construct a $48.8 million student center. The building commission's action allows the project to proceed to full design, bid and construction.

Bidding is estimated to take place in October, and construction of the approximately 170,000-square-foot, three-story building could start in November. Occupancy is expected in 2012.

The student center will be built in the space between Little Niagara Creek and the Phillips parking lot on lower campus, just south of Davies Center.

A temporary parking lot will be constructed in the area south of Zorn Arena, west of the Campus School and north of Schneider Hall to replace some of the parking spaces that will be lost during construction of the student center. Construction of the temporary lot is slated to begin this summer.

The student center will be funded through segregated fees, which are paid by students. No tax dollars will be involved in the development or operation of the building.

The new university student center will replace the 51-year-old Davies Center, which will be deconstructed. The site of the existing Davies Center will be redeveloped as green space.

For details about the project, contact Dr. Beth Hellwig, chair of the University Student Center Steering Committee, at 715-836-5992.
