Hate/Bias Incident Response Team works to enhance campus climate

RELEASED: May 5, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — A group of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire administrators, faculty, staff and students are working to ensure that anyone observing hateful, intolerant or biased actions on campus have a place to go for help or to report what they have witnessed.

"We're trying to be proactive and let members of the campus community know there are people they can contact if they need help or see something that is discriminatory," said Dr. Beth Hellwig, vice chancellor for student affairs and chair of the newly created Hate/Bias Incident Response Team. "Ensuring that everyone — regardless of their differences such as race, religious beliefs or sexual orientation — feels safe and comfortable on our campus is a university priority."

Equity, diversity and inclusiveness on campus is a goal that was identified during the university's strategic planning process, Hellwig said. The Hate/Bias Incident Response Team is one of many university initiatives that relate to enhanced EDI efforts on campus, she said.

"This is a group that can come together as needed," Hellwig said, noting that the team includes representatives from a variety of offices and units on campus. "The group may provide advice, create an action plan or share information as needed. It's a group we hope won't have to meet often, but we want the campus community to know we're there if they need us."

Hellwig said she is encouraging anyone who observes discriminatory actions to report it as quickly as possible. Those actions could range from racist graffiti to hateful taunts directed at a person or group of people, she said.

This summer the team will develop an online reporting form, Hellwig said. In the meantime, people are encouraged to report concerns to the Dean of Students office, University Police, the Affirmative Action office or the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
