'Eat for Free Clinics' event to raise money for health care

RELEASED: May 5, 2010

Eat For Free Clinics imageEAU CLAIRE — A new student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is partnering with the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic to raise awareness of health disparities in the community and raise money for the clinic.

Members of Progress on Health Disparities helped organize the "Eat for Free Clinics" event scheduled for May 6. Many local restaurants, including Haymarket Grill, Northwoods Brew Pub and Shanghai Bistro, will donate 25 percent of that day's gross sales to cover health care costs for low income individuals without insurance.

"We are working with the CVFC to find ways to raise awareness and get students involved," said senior Tim Lauer, Whitewater, co-president of the student group, who noted that the free clinic has served more than 5,800 patients in about 25,000 visits since opening in 1997.

"One way that we as a community can help is by simply going out to eat at a great local restaurant, which will raise money directly for healthcare costs," he said.

UW-Eau Claire students in Mexico medical clinic

UW-Eau Claire seniors Tim Lauer and Aaron Wingad, alumna Paulina Duarte, and freshman Carlos Guereca took supplies to a clinic in Mexico.

The student group traveled to Victoria de Guadalupe, Durango, Mexico, over spring break and volunteered in a rural free clinic as a part of the "Campana de Salud" (health campaign) sponsored by Lions Club International. They also delivered medical supplies donated by the CVFC. Lauer said the group plans to make similar trips back to Mexico and other areas of need.

For more information about "Eat for Free Clinics" and the complete list of participating restaurants, visit the event website. Progress on Health Disparities is open to all university students. Those interested should contact Tim Lauer at lauertd@uwec.edu. For information about the CVFC, contact executive director Brent Hafele at 715-839-8477 or brent@cvfreeclinic.org.
