Story/Photo Idea
More than 1,000 area fifth-graders will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday, May 4-5, as part of the Blugold Beginnings program's first Fifth-Grade Tour Day. Students from Eau Claire schools will visit May 4, and students from Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Arcadia will visit May 5. Activities will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 4 and 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. May 5 at various campus locations. The event will allow the fifth-graders to learn about college and to feel comfortable in a university setting. They'll explore campus, including residence halls and classrooms. They'll also experience class demonstrations created for them. About 340 UW-Eau Claire student mentors will lead the fifth-graders. Mentors will spend the day with their groups during the campus visit, and then will go to their schools the week of May 10. Blugold Beginnings is a pre-college access program that pairs UW-Eau Claire students with youth in area schools. It aims to inform and inspire underrepresented students about higher education and how it is attainable for them. For details about the Fifth-Grade Tour Day, contact Lissa Martinez, Blugold Beginnings program coordinator, at 715-836-3651 or martinlj@uwec.edu. She also can give you times and locations of specific activities that may provide photo and video opportunities.

Story Idea
The premier jazz publication in the United States has again honored UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I as one of the best collegiate jazz ensembles in the country. Jazz Ensemble I received the Down Beat Award for Best College Jazz Ensemble for its new CD, "Jazz in Clearwater — Soul Searching," which was released April 29. The Down Beat awards are considered the educational Grammys; they are the highest possible awards college jazz programs can receive to be recognized for achievement. This is the sixth time Jazz Ensemble I has won this prestigious national award. Other colleges and universities winning the award in past years have been significantly larger institutions than UW-Eau Claire, with many of them having full-time jazz faculty members, graduate programs in jazz and/or undergraduate degrees in jazz studies. For details, contact Robert Baca at 715-836-4371 or bacarj@uwec.edu.
