Winners of Juried Student Art Show announced at exhibit opening

EAU CLAIRE — The 53rd annual Juried Student Art Show at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire opened March 25 with an awards presentation and reception in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

This year 173 works were submitted by students, with 63 accepted into the exhibit.

"Pitcher and Three Cups" by Tiffany Bailey and "Familiar Passage" by Anne Backstrom are award winners in the Juried Student Art Show in the Foster Gallery.

Senior Mathias Hughey, Lodi, won first place for his untitled burlap and jute installation piece. Second place went to Tiffany Bailey, Eau Claire, for her slip cast porcelain piece, "Pitcher and Three Cups." Senior Jason Ebel, Ft. Atkinson, took third place for his ink and acrylic piece, "The Good, The Bad, The Queen." Honorable mention awards were earned by senior Stacie Weisse, Ashwaubenon, for her relief print "Japanese Lady Beetles"; sophomore Catie Griffiths, Weston, for her acrylic piece "Beautality"; senior Anne Hines, Omro, for her photograph "Thirst"; senior Anne Backstrom, Maddock, N.D., for her ceramic piece "Familiar Passage"; and senior Jennifer Herman, Green Bay, for her sculpture "Shut Down to Rise Up."

The exhibit, which will run through April 21, is free and open to the public.

Foster Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 6-8 p.m. Thursdays and 1-4:30 p.m. weekends. The gallery will be closed March 27-April 4 for the university's spring break, but will reopen April 5.
