First Fridays program to highlight international student experiences

RELEASED: March 26, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire's First Fridays program for senior citizens will continue its spring season with an April 9 presentation titled "Understanding Across Borders: Welcoming International Students to Eau Claire" by international student advisers Krista Brown and Jodi Simek. They will discuss ways in which UW-Eau Claire's international students adjust to life in Eau Claire. University efforts that help with this transition include the Host Friend Program, in which community members connect with international students; the Cultural Connections Program, in which international students share their cultures with the community; and the International Folk Fair, an annual fall event that features food, dance and informational displays.

A free continental breakfast will precede the formal program at Christ Church Cathedral, located on the corner of Lake and Farwell Streets in downtown Eau Claire. Doors will open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and the presentation will begin at 9 a.m. For the safety of the program's senior citizen audience, the event will be canceled if the Eau Claire Area School District has canceled or delayed classes due to hazardous weather.

First Fridays occurs on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January; the April event will take place on the second Friday of the month due to a campuswide furlough April 2. First Fridays programs are free for the senior community. Those who have season passes stamped each month will be eligible for a grand prize drawing at the May presentation.

Now in its eighth season, First Fridays is funded in part by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts. The program is coordinated by Jennifer Brockpahler of the University Centers' Activities and Programs office and is hosted by Christ Church Cathedral. Scott and Heather Kirby and Stan Carpenter are First Fridays' community partners. The mission of First Fridays is to provide no-cost entertainment and educational experiences for senior citizens of the extended Chippewa Valley community through shared community and university sponsorship. More information is available online.
