Regional History Day competition set for March 26

RELEASED: March 23, 2010

National History Day logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host the Northwestern Wisconsin Regional National History Day competition March 26.

The event is an opportunity for middle school and high school students to explore history by researching a topic of interest and producing historical documentaries, exhibits, dramatic performances, Web sites or research papers based on the theme "Innovation in History."

The event will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the second floor of Davies Center. UW-Eau Claire history students, graduate students and local dignitaries will be among those judging the entries. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Organizers expect more than 275 students in grades 6-12 to participate in the event, along with 37 educators and 37 judges.

The event is the next in a series of competitive National History Day events, which begin at the individual school level and includes state and national competitions. Regional winners will compete at the state level and those winners advance to the national competition. This is the sixth regional competition to be held at UW-Eau Claire.

Co-coordinators of the regional competition are Janet Seymour, field services representative, northern region, Wisconsin Historical Society Division of Historic Preservation-Public History, located in the UW-Eau Claire history department; and Dr. John Mann, associate professor of history. Guy Lewinski, a graduate student, also is working on coordinating the event. Sponsors are the history department, Phi Alpha Theta, the Center for History Teaching and Learning, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Wisconsin History Day is slated for May 1 in Madison, and the national contest is set for June 13-17 at the University of Maryland-College Park. For details about the regional History Day competition, contact Dr. John Mann at mannjw@uwec.edu.
