RELEASED: March 23, 2010

Eau Claire Jazz Festival reception invitationEAU CLAIRE — A Jazz Alumni Band Concert performed by University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduates is a new event at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival this year.

The concert will be presented at 4:30 p.m. April 17 in Zorn Arena by 17 UW-Eau Claire alumni who were part of the university's jazz studies program. Members of the band will be traveling to Eau Claire from as far away as California and Kentucky. Alumni include the principal bassist for the San Francisco Symphony, curator for the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., movie score composers and teachers from the middle school through college level. In addition to performing, several band members also will serve as adjudicators for the jazz festival.

"Planning for the alumni band has been in the works for years, and we hope to make it an annual event," said Robert Baca, Eau Claire Jazz Festival artistic director. "We want to get these players back together again to do what they enjoy most, and that's playing jazz. It's going to be phenomenal."

The band will perform two jazz pieces: "All the Things You Are," composed by Clifford Brown and arranged by Don Sebesky; and "The Jazz Calling," composed by John Clayton.

The concert is free and open to the public. For tickets to the concert, call 715-836-4092 or e-mail alumni@eauclairejazz.com.

The concert will be followed by a reception for UW-Eau Claire alumni and friends from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Penthouse of Hibbard Hall. The reception, hosted by Eau Claire Jazz Inc. and the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association, will include appetizers, a cash bar and music by a jazz combo. Cost for the reception is $10 per person. Alumni and friends must RSVP for the reception by April 14 by calling 715-836-4092 or e-mailing alumni@eauclairejazz.com.
