More than 100 members of the Blugold Marching Band will spend Spring Break in Europe as part of a performance tour. The "Springtime in Paris" tour includes stops in Paris, London and Venice. The students, along with several directors/managers and a number of parents, will travel March 27-April 5. With more than 250 members, the Blugold Marching Band is one of the largest and most active marching bands in the Midwest. Story Idea
Fourteen novice principals who serve in schools in western and central Wisconsin will participate in a leadership program this month at UW-Eau Claire. Principals who have been in their positions between one and five years are eligible to participate. The Leadership Academy will begin Wednesday, March 24. The group will meet on campus once a month through June. A UW-Eau Claire alumna donated funds to make the program possible. For more information, contact Dr. Dwight C. Nursing students, in partnership with Oakwood Homes and London Square apartments in Eau Claire, will provide free health care fairs for seniors this week. The fairs will run from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, in the community room of Oakwood Homes Apartments on Damon Street, and from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, in the community room of London Square Apartments on London Road. The fairs will include a demonstration of how Nintendo Wii can be used for exercise, flexibility and balance. There also will be blood pressure screenings, hand-massage demonstrations, sleep tips, and exercise tips. The students are enrolled in a "Nursing Practice in Health and Illness" class, which requires them to complete a health education project. Clinical instructors and registered nurses Katherine German-Olson and Diane Marcyjanik will supervise. The "Ask a Scientist" series will continue with a presentation by Dr. Robert Andersen, associate professor of mathematics. The session, titled "Numbers that are Bigger than Infinity," will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at the Acoustic Café in Eau Claire. The discussion will focus on the possibility of extending numbers beyond the infinite barrier. The "Ask a Scientist" sessions are geared toward the layperson. "Girls Fight Back!" will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, March 22, in the Council Fire Room, Davies Center. The interactive program will focus on women's safety and self-defense. It will combine cutting-edge safety training, empowerment and techniques that are easy to remember. The program was developed in 2001 after the murder of an Illinois college student. Her friend created the program to help women understand that it's not necessary to be a black belt to save your life. The award-winning seminars are attended by more than 100,000 women annually.
