Public health intervention program for nurses set for March 24

RELEASED: March 22, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — An educational program for school and community health nurses will be held March 24 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

"Exploring the Public Health Intervention Wheel: Best Practices in School and Public Health Settings" will meet from noon-4 p.m. March 24 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. The program is designed for those interested in an overview of the Public Health Intervention Wheel and a hands-on application session.

Rebecca Hovarter and Karen Morris, regional public health nurse consultants with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health will present. Hovarter will give a presentation about the electronic version of the Public Health Intervention Wheel, and Morris will discuss how the wheel relates to the Wisconsin public health nursing practice model.

A panel of community health nursing experts, moderated by Dr. Mary Canales, associate professor of nursing at UW-Eau Claire, will address how the wheel is applied in the roles of a preceptor, mentor, school nurse and public health nurse.

Interactive exercises led by Hovarter will give participants an opportunity to apply the concepts to their own area of practice.

The event is co-sponsored by the Linking Education and Practice for Excellence in Public Health Nursing project, the UW-Eau Claire College of Nursing and Health Services and the Wisconsin Division of Public Health, western region. The LEAP project is a statewide, collaborative effort linking education and practice to meet the need for contemporary public health nursing practice.

The program fee is $7, which includes materials and lunch. For more information, contact Pam Guthman, Eau Claire region LEAP education practice liaison, at guthman@wisc.edu or 715-836-2064.
