EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff as well as community members are invited to participate in the fourth annual International Poetry Reading from 7-9 p.m. April 26 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The event showcases the beauty of languages from around the world. No poetry is read in standard English, but English translations of all poems are provided. Last year more than 200 attendees heard poems in 35 different languages, according to event organizers Dr. Audrey Fessler, assistant professor of English and women's studies, and Dr. Jeff Vahlbusch, associate professor of German and director of the university Honors Program.

Guidelines to participate are as follows:

  • Send an e-mail message as soon as possible to Vahlbusch at vahlbujb@uwec.edu with "Poetry Reading" in the subject line. Include your name, e-mail address and choice of language. Readers will be scheduled as time permits.
  • Choose a short poem (under 50 lines) in any language except modern, standard English. Send an electronic copy of the poem and an English translation to Vahlbusch by midnight April 9. Entries will be reproduced in a booklet to be distributed at the event. Bibliographic information in both languages is requested.
  • Arrive at the Council Fire Room of Davies Center by 6:30 p.m. April 26 ready to read the poem in its original language.

The event is hosted by UW-Eau Claire's English Fest 2010 and sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Center for International Education and the foreign languages and English departments.

For more information, contact Dr. Audrey Fessler at fessleaa@uwec.edu or 715-836-3016, or Dr. Jeff Vahlbusch at vahlbujb@uwec.edu or 715-836-4490.
