Hmong Culture Fest slated for March 20

RELEASED: March 10, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Hmong Student Association will host Culture Fest from 4-8 p.m. March 20 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. The theme of this year's event is "Hmong Oral Tradition."

Culture Fest is held annually at UW-Eau Claire to offer information about Hmong culture and provide an opportunity for people from different cultures to meet and socialize.

"The Hmong Student Association works very hard to accurately represent Hmong culture," said HSA member Sai Vang. "Every year many people congregate to enjoy music, food and informative and entertaining workshops."

The event will feature workshops, student performances, a student-developed documentary of Hmong oral tradition, free Hmong cuisine, raffles and door prizes.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Yer J. Thao, an associate professor in the department of curriculum and instruction at Portland State University. His book, "Mong Oral Tradition: Culture Memory in Absence of Written Language," is a landmark text in the field of Hmong studies and is highly respected within Asian-American education.

Culture Fest is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and HSA. All events are free and open to the public and are suitable for all ages.

To ensure that there is enough complimentary food available, those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Christine Webster at websteck@uwec.edu by March 19.

For more information, contact Tor Lee at leett@uwec.edu or Dr. Christin DePouw at depouwca@uwec.edu or 715-836-5587.
