University Symphony Orchestra to perform spring concert March 21

EAU CLAIRE — The University Symphony Orchestra will present a concert featuring winners of the annual Student Concerto Competition at 2 p.m. March 21 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The orchestra, under the direction of Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, will begin its performance with Edward Elgar's Concerto for Violoncello in E minor, op. 85. The piece will feature sophomore Jory Tuftin, Brooklyn Park, Minn., winner of the string division competition, on cello.

The concert will continue with "Genesis" Concerto for Clarinet, composed by senior Aaron Hedenstrom, St. Paul, Minn., composition division winner; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Piano in C minor featuring senior Samuel Emmons, Barron, winner of the piano division competition, on piano.

Next will be Serenade Op. 35 for Flute, Harp and Strings by Howard Hanson, with junior Alexandria Zunker, Conrath, a wind and percussion division winner, on flute; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet in A major with senior Jennifer Tinberg, Chanhassen, Minn., a wind and percussion division winner, on clarinet.

The Symphony Orchestra will conclude its performance with Johannes Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, op. 80. The piece will feature freshman Bret Van Nuland, Greenville, conducting division winner.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
