Symphony Band and Wind Symphony to perform March 14

RELEASED: March 2, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Symphony Band and Wind Symphony will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. March 14 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Symphony Band, directed by Dr. Phillip Ostrander, associate professor of music, will begin the concert with "Festivo" by Edward Gregson. The band then will perform Kent Kennan's Sonata for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble — Movement III, featuring Bob Baca, professor of music, on trumpet. "Blessed Are They" from "A German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms, Eric Whitacre's "Equus" and "Mambo Furioso" by Brant Karrick will follow. Symphony Band's portion of the concert will conclude with "Men of Ohio" by Henry Fillmore.

Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Peter Haberman, assistant professor of music, will take the stage next and begin with "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" by John Adams. The group then will perform Scott Boerma's "Zirk," featuring Dr. Verle Ormsby Jr., lecturer of music, on horn. Next will be "Variations on a Shaker Melody" by Aaron Copland and "Symphonic Dances from 'West Side Story'" by Leonard Bernstein. The concert will conclude with "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Phillip Sousa.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center (715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC), are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
