UW-Eau Claire named to Community Service Honor Roll for fourth consecutive year

RELEASED: March 2, 2010

Corporation for National and Community Service logoEAU CLAIRE — For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been recognized for its outstanding community service programs by a federal agency charged with fostering an ethic of volunteerism and service in America.

Community Service Honor Roll sealUW-Eau Claire was among 115 public and private colleges, universities and professional schools named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, with distinction for general community service. The honor roll is compiled by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The program is designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their communities and across the country through volunteer service.

UW-Eau Claire and Beloit College were the only schools in Wisconsin named to the 2009 Honor Roll with distinction. UW-Eau Claire was the only Wisconsin school, public or private, named to the Honor Roll with distinction every one of the four years since the honor roll was instituted in 2006.

"Our service-learning program has become an important aspect of a UW-Eau Claire education and is unique in the UW System," said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. "We're honored to receive this national recognition for a program that prepares our students to become active citizens and meets vital needs in the community."

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Among the other 114 schools named to the distinction list this year were Brigham Young University; Bryn Mawr College; Fordham University; Michigan State University; Tulane University; Rochester Institute of Technology; Syracuse University; University of California, Los Angeles; University of North Carolina, Charlotte; and The University of Texas at Austin.

The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the honor roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education. More information can be found at on their Web site.
