EAU CLAIRE — A free outdoor concert by the Peter Phippen Group July 12 will highlight the fifth week of the Summer Events series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin of Davies Center). The audience is invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to the concert. Free popcorn will be available.

Peter Phippen began playing, collecting and researching world flutes in 1987. His connection to these instruments was formed when a friend gave him his first flute, an Indian bansuri. Since then, Phippen has had four CDs released by Canyon Records of Phoenix — recordings that have brought his flute playing to the attention of critics and flute enthusiasts worldwide. Released in October 2006, "Shadows of Dawn" was featured for five months in the top 25 on Public Radio International's syndicated program "Echoes," peaking at No. 8. "Night Song" was a 2003 Native American Music Awards nominee in the Native Heart category. "Echoes of the Past" was a finalist in the 2000 Crossroads Music Awards. And his debut recording with Canyon Records, "Book of Dreams," charted at No. 17 in the New Age Voice. Phippen has also played antique and contemporary bamboo and Native American flutes on two releases for Lifescapes as well as three solo recordings with On Hold Productions/Music Design Specialties with the permission of Canyon Records.

The light classical concerts are presented in cooperation with the department of music and theatre arts.
  • The Shakespeare and Others in the Park Series continues July 14 with regional authors presenting an evening of poetry and prose. The program will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin of Davies Center).
  • The Fresh Start Farmers Mart will bring a sample of area farmers market offerings to campus July 15 from 8 a.m. to noon on the sidewalk north of Zorn Arena.

With the theme "Welcome to our Backyard," the Summer Events series continues through Aug. 5. A complete schedule is available online or at the Service Center, 715-836-3727. The eight-week series is funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire and coordinated by the University Centers.
