Invited members of the community will get a firsthand look at a popular summer program for area youth during WYSP Community Day from 11:10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23. Dr. Steve Kristo of Kristo Orthodontics in Eau Claire, which recently donated $15,000 in support of WYSP, and Gray Powers, general manager of Powertex Group in Eau Claire, a UW-Eau Claire alumnus and former WYSP participant, will speak during the Community Day program. WYSP stands for Wisconsin Youth Success Program (formerly the National Youth Sports Program and later the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program), a free five-week summer camp on the UW-Eau Claire campus that has served nearly 11,000 Chippewa Valley youth over the past 29 years. Each summer WYSP, run by UW-Eau Claire's University Recreation & Sport Facilities staff, has provided more than 400 area youth ages 10-16 with opportunities to develop leadership, academic and athletic skills. Youth from the Eau Claire and Altoona school districts receive free transportation to and from camp, as well as two federally subsidized meals on site each day. Until 2008, WYSP was supported by federal funding. Since that funding was eliminated, the program has relied on community partnerships and private funding for support. Those attending Community Day will meet at UW-Eau Claire's Hilltop Center at 11:10 for a tour of camp activities. Presentations by Kristo, Powers and WYSP officials will follow at 12:05 p.m. on the outdoor track behind the McPhee Physical Education Center (rain site is the gymnasium in the McPhee Center). Members of the media are welcome to join the WYSP Community Day tour and to attend the presentations. For more information, contact Lisa Marie Schuetz, WYSP activity director, at 715-836-2400 or schuetlm@uwec.edu.
