EAU CLAIRE — Seven adult children of Michael and Vera Jansen, four of whom attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, have established an endowed scholarship to honor their parents for helping them graduate from college.

The Michael and Vera Jansen Scholarship, established through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, will be awarded to graduating students from Holcombe High School and Flambeau High School, where Michael Jansen was a teacher. The scholarship will provide college funding to UW-Eau Claire students with academic potential but limited financial means.

The Jansen children surprised their parents by announcing the establishment of the fund during a July 26 celebration at UW-Eau Claire of the Jansens' 60th wedding anniversary. In addition to honoring their parents' commitment to the education of their children, the scholarship also honors Michael Jansen's career as a teacher.

Michael Jansen, after joining the U.S. Navy when he was 17 and serving in the Philippines during World War II, graduated from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., with a degree in industrial arts education. After again serving stateside in the Navy during the Korean conflict, he taught industrial arts and driver's education at Holcombe High School and Flambeau High School. He also was involved in salary negotiations for teachers. Currently he is involved in the Civil Air Patrol in St. Paul, Minn., working with inner-city high school students.

Vera Jansen attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., majoring in nutrition. She was a homemaker, managed the family farm and worked and volunteered at Willard Elementary School in Holcombe.

Michael and Vera Jansen now live in White Bear Lake, Minn.

For more information about applying for or contributing to the Michael and Vera Jansen Scholarship, contact Kelly Olson, scholarship coordinator in the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, at 715-836-4045 or olsonke@uwec.edu.
