Music faculty to present popular 'Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps'

RELEASED: Jan. 29, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music department will present a faculty performance of Olivier Messiaen's "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" ("Quartet for the End of Time") at 2 p.m. Feb. 7 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The recital will feature Dr. Namji Kim, associate professor of music, on piano; Dr. Tulio Rondon, assistant professor of music, on cello; Dr. Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, on violin; and Dr. Richard Fletcher, professor of music, on clarinet.

Messiaen composed "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" while in captivity by the German army during World War II. It premiered in Stalag VIIIA in Görlitz, Germany, on Jan. 15, 1941, to an audience of nearly 400 prisoners of war and prison guards. He performed the piece alongside fellow musicians and prisoners Jean Le Boulaire on violin, Henri Akoka on clarinet and Etienne Pasquier on cello.

Fletcher said the instruments chosen are an unusual paring, but "Messiaen chose these instruments in particular because they were what were available during his imprisonment."

In his preface to the piece, Messiaen cited a passage from Revelation as his inspiration. "Quatuor" is performed in eight movements for the six days of creation sanctified by the Sabbath on the seventh, and then, "this repose extends into eternity and becomes the eighth day of eternal light, of unalterable peace," wrote Messiaen.

"We chose this work because it is one of the outstanding chamber music works from the 20th century," said Fletcher, who added that the quartet has never performed it.

The faculty performance of "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" is free and open to the public.
