'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' to screen Feb. 4-7

RELEASED: Jan. 27, 2010

poster for Kiss Kiss, Bang BangEAU CLAIRE — "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" (2005), the directing debut of screenwriter Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon"), will screen Feb. 4-7 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The fast-paced buddy-action comedy will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"This manic tribute to film noir, starring a wackily inspired Robert Downey Jr., is his breath-stealing, riff-running, ever-escalating piece de resistance," wrote The Washington Post.

Downey stars as a perpetually unlucky petty thief who stumbles into an unlikely audition for a Hollywood detective movie. To prepare for his screen test he teams up with a Los Angeles private eye (Val Kilmer) to learn the basics of detection and the role research abruptly becomes real. Michelle Monaghan and Corbin Bernsen co-star.

"Writer-director Shane Black knows detective movies and pulp fiction inside out," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle. "In 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,' he takes all the elements and scenes that have become staples of these genres and changes them slightly, so that we get a hard-boiled narrator, but not quite; a tense Russian roulette scene, but not exactly; and a scene in which the hero defends a lady's honor, with a slightly unexpected result. 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' mocks, celebrates, wallows in and ultimately exemplifies the allure of the traditional Hollywood formula."

The University Activities Commission of the Student Senate will present the 102-minute film, which is rated R. Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133.
