UW-Eau Claire alumni, former faculty featured in ECCO concert

RELEASED: Jan. 14, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra's upcoming free Family Concert is a veritable reunion of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumni and former faculty. The "ECCO Tells the Tale" concert will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Memorial High School in Eau Claire and marks the world premiere of Dr. Michael Cunningham's composition "My Name is Pinocchio."

Cunningham, a UW-Eau Claire professor emeritus of music, retired in 2006. The piece will be conducted by Dan Julson, a 1995 graduate of UW-Eau Claire and a member of ECCO's trumpet section.

"ECCO is particularly pleased to present the world premiere of Cunningham's new version of the Pinocchio story," said Ivar Lunde Jr., ECCO music director. Lunde, also a UW-Eau Claire professor emeritus of music, retired in 2003. "This is a piece that will be enjoyed by young and old."

"Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears," by Peter Hesterman, will be conducted by Julson and narrated by 1981 UW-Eau Claire graduate Paul Gilbertson. Gilbertson has been the North High School choir director for 19 years.

The Memorial High School Orchestra, directed by Soma Pierce-Smit, also will join ECCO to perform the first movement of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. Pierce-Smit is ECCO's principal second violinist and graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2001.

The chamber orchestra is featured on Community Television's analog channel 96 and digital channel 993 in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls (and many other area communities) Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 6:30 p.m. The current program previews the Family Concert and features a conversation with Cunningham and Lunde.

The concert is underwritten in part by Xcel Energy, RBC Wealth Management and Visit Eau Claire, with additional contributions by the Clear Water Kiwanis Club of Eau Claire and the AnnMarie Foundation.
