EAU CLAIRE — A team of students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire placed second in the Travelers Second Annual Actuarial Case Competition held concurrently in St. Paul, Minn., and Hartford, Conn., Oct. 16. They received a $500 prize.

Members of the team were senior Kevin Kropp, Stevens Point; senior Matt Fjerstad, New Richmond; junior Mark Bauer, Spencer; senior James Hollman, Weston; junior Han Mei Pak, an international student from Malaysia; and sophomore Jiaying "Kathy" Du, an international student from China.

Led by Kristopher Presler, associate professor of mathematics, the group competed against teams from top universities across the country.

The competition is a unique opportunity for students to present innovative solutions to real-world issues facing the property and casualty insurance industry. In a four-hour period, the teams research, organize and prepare a case for managing emerging risks. The teams present their findings and resulting strategies to a panel of six actuarial and business leaders from Travelers.

The competition was sponsored by the Travelers Actuarial Leadership Development Program.
