Musical events for the week of Feb. 22

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Feb. 22. All events are free and open to the public.

Thursday, Feb. 25:

  • Senior Ashley Vial, Green Bay, and sophomore Kurt Shipe, Fond du Lac, will present a trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Shipe will perform selections by Sergei Rachmaninov and Robert Schumann. Vial will present selections by Marcel Bitsch and Alexander Arutunian. The two students also will join for a performance of "Die Bankelsangerlieder." Vial and Shipe will be assisted by the Clear Water Brass Quintet and the UW-Eau Claire Brass Ensemble. Dr. Owen Lovell, assistant professor of music, and senior Mary Zimmerman will assist on piano.

Sunday, Feb. 28:

  • The Sonora Reed Trio will perform at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Members of the trio are Dr. Christa Garvey, associate professor of music, on oboe; Dr. Richard Fletcher, professor of music, on clarinet; and Dr. Kristine Fletcher, lecturer of music, on bassoon. Dr. Owen Lovell, assistant professor of music, will provide piano accompaniment for two pieces: Lukas Hurnik's "Fusion Music" and Alex Haieff's "Serenade." The trio also will perform pieces by Erwin Schulhoff, Joaquin Gutierrez Heras, Jenni Brandon and James Chaudoir. The trio will perform those selections during a broadcast of Wisconsin Public Radio's "Live from the Chazen" in April.
