Event helps prospective college students and families apply for financial aid

RELEASED: Feb. 15, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — Financial Aid professionals from local colleges and universities will be among those helping area high school seniors and their parents apply for financial aid during College Goal Sunday.

The free event will begin at 2 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Chippewa Valley Technical College, 620 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire. Participants are instructed to use the entrance by parking lot P6 or P7 (near the front). Similar help sessions will take place at the same time at 25 locations throughout the state with the goal of helping high school students and their families access federal and state college aid.

During the Eau Claire session, financial aid experts from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, CVTC, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, Globe University, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction/WEOP and area lending institutions will provide step-by-step help in completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. A $250 scholarship drawing also will be held.

The FAFSA is an essential first step to attaining financial aid for higher education but it can be intimidating for people. The message from organizers is that there is money available for college so prospective students should not be discouraged.

College Goal Sunday is designed to address the needs of low-income and first-generation college families, many of whom think they cannot afford to attend college. However, all families seeking help with the FAFSA are welcome. Completing the FAFSA is the first step students must take to overcome their financial burdens and pursue their goals of higher education.

Students and parents should bring their completed federal income tax forms for 2009, W2 statements and other 2009 income and/or benefits information to the workshop to receive the full extent of help and advice in completing the application. Last year, 2,320 people received help at College Goal Sunday, which was held at more than 700 sites nationwide.

The nationwide event is sponsored locally by the Wisconsin Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators with a grant from Lumina Foundation for Education.
