Winter Carnival 2010 begins Feb. 18

Winter Carnival 2010 logoEAU CLAIRE — Winter Carnival 2010 — "Shiver and Shake It" — is set for Feb. 18-21 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Highlights are a comedy showcase, a singer-songwriter slam, a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and a concert by industrial rock band Savage Aural Hotbed. The celebration also features a number of outdoor recreation activities. Events are free unless noted.

Thursday, Feb. 18:

  • Dogsledding, 1-3 p.m., Central Campus Mall. See or experience dogsledding firsthand, weather permitting (ample snow required). Co-sponsored by the Environmental Adventure Center.
  • Hot Beverage Bash, 1-3 p.m., Central Campus Mall. Visit with Winter Carnival sponsors and warm up with a free hot chocolate or hot cider beverage.
  • "Repo! The Genetic Opera," 6 and 8:30 p.m., Davies Theatre; screening through Sunday. Starring Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head and Sarah Brightman, this 2008 horror-musical film is making a bid for cult status. Admission is free with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members may buy IFS memberships at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in the east lobby of Davies Center.

Friday, Feb. 19:

  • Chili Feed, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., veranda, Davies Center. Co-sponsored by the Environmental Adventure Center.
  • Singer-Songwriter Slam, 8 p.m., The Cabin, Davies Center; also Saturday. Anyone is welcome to sign up to perform, but no more than 20 people can perform each evening. Performers must arrive at or before 7:45 p.m. the night of the show. There is no advance sign up. All material must be original. Performers may play one song, with the performance not exceeding seven minutes. Performances will be judged by three people selected at random from the audience and two people chosen in advance by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate. One winner will be named each evening. The two winners each will receive a paid local-talent spot at The Cabin and a Winter Carnival T-shirt.
  • Shiver, Shake and Laugh 'til Your Belly Aches: Winter Carnival Comedy Show featuring Rob O'Reilly and Derek Hughes, 9 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party, 11 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," 11:59 p.m., Council Fire Room, Davies Center. Roger Ebert has called the 1975 cult film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Tickets are $8 ($5 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.

Saturday, Feb. 20:

  • Ice Fishing Tournament, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Lake Altoona. Tickets are $10 at the Environmental Adventure Center in Hilltop Center or at the event. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required. More information is available online.
  • Savage Aural Hotbed, 7 p.m., Council Fire Room, Davies Center. This industrial rock-and-roll band from Minneapolis creates its compelling sound using conventional and found-object percussion instruments, bass guitar, electronically modified horns, vocals and power tools. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and at the door.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party, 10 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.

Sunday, Feb. 21:

  • Ping-Pong Tournament, 3-5 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.

Winter Carnival activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, and University Recreation & Sport Facilities, part of the UW-Eau Claire division of Student Affairs.
