'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' returns to campus Feb. 19

RELEASED: Feb. 9, 2010

poster for Rocky Horror Picture ShowEAU CLAIRE — "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," a Winter Carnival tradition at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will screen Feb. 19. The very definition of the term "cult film," the campy British rock-musical will screen at 11:59 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

"Witness the worldwide cult for 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,' which bombed upon its 1975 release, yet which has enlivened sing-along dress-up parties for the past 30 years," wrote the Toronto Star. "A horror flick, comedy and musical all in one, Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien's adaptation of their own stage sensation has become the hardiest of all midnight movies."

Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon star as squeaky-clean college sweethearts Brad and Janet, who get lost in the rain and have car trouble. They look for help down the road — at the Frankenstein castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), who is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments.

"It can be read as an allegory of a drug trip, a paean to (or warning about) sexual experimentation, a love letter to old B-movies, even as a satire on the political degeneracy of America," wrote The Times (London). "The 1975 film version, which has repaid its $1 million budget more than a hundredfold, is pointedly set on the night of Nixon's resignation. More simply, it's a contemporary panto that for 35 years has given the audience an excuse to drag up, shout out the best lines, and pelt the screen with bread when Frank calls for 'a toast!' And it's Frank — dangerously charismatic, thoroughly amoral and joyously polysexual, gloriously played by Tim Curry ... who gives the show its beating heart."

The 100-minute film is rated R. Tickets are $8 ($5 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, and will be sold at the door.

The screening is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
