Musical events for the week of Feb. 15

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Feb. 15. All events are free and open to the public.

Monday, Feb. 15:

  • Junior Gregory Ellis, Waukesha, will present a trombone and piano recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Ellis will be assisted on piano by senior Anna Torgerson on compositions by Lars-Erik Larsson, Sigismond Stojovski and Fritz Grube. Ellis also will perform a piece by Thelonious Monk featuring senior Nick LaMuro on drums, sophomore Will Horn on trombone and sophomore Dani Pedersen on bass. He will conclude with his arrangement of the jazz standard "Just Friends," created with Horn.

Tuesday, Feb. 16:

  • Senior Nate Brunette, Verona, will present a cello recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by senior Sam Emmons, Brunette will begin with selections by Johann Sebastian Bach and Franz Joseph Haydn. For the second half of the recital, he will perform a sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven and "Truckin' Through the South" by Aaron Minsky. Brunette enjoys Bach, Haydn and Beethoven, and decided to include the Minsky piece for its overall humor.

Thursday, Feb. 18:

  • Senior Rebecca Lovejoy, Plover, and Jacob Truby, Appleton, will present a joint soprano and tenor voice recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by senior Anna Torgerson, Lovejoy will lead with "I Hate Music!" by Leonard Bernstein. Selections by Franz Schubert, Libby Larsen, Vincenzo Bellini and Charles Gounod will follow. Lovejoy plays the roles of a star-crossed lover, the voice of death and three former queens of England. Truby will perform selections by Felix Mendelssohn, Gerald Finzi, Franz Liszt, Francis Poulenc and Friedrich von Flotow.

Sunday, Feb. 21:

  • Dr. Tim Lane, professor of music, will present a flute recital at 2 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. He will begin with "Cancion de Otono" by Manuel M. Ponce. He also will perform selections by Joaquin Gutierrez Heras, Rodolfo Halffter, Mario Lavista and Silvestre Revueltas. Lane will be assisted on piano by Lori Cruciani, lecturer of music. Dr. Lane has taught at UW-Eau Claire since 1989. He serves as principal flutist for the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra, is a guest performer with the period instrument ensemble Les Favorites and performs for Wisconsin Public Radio. He also composes pieces for flute and currently is working on a method book for musicians.
